🐾 World Day for Laboratory Animals (April 24)

This One Is Personal: Until Every Cage Is Empty

World Day for Laboratory Animals is not abstract to me. My beagle is an Envigo beagle. So when April 24 comes around, I do not experience it as a generic awareness day. I experience it as a reminder that behind every sterile phrase like “research animal” or “purpose-bred” is a living being who did not consent, did not volunteer, and was never born to spend a life inside a system built on confinement and use.

🛡️ Envigo Was Never “Just One Bad Case”

People sometimes talk about Envigo as if it was a terrible exception. A scandal. A one-off. It was not. In 2022, the Justice Department secured the surrender of more than 4,000 beagles from Envigo’s Cumberland, Virginia facility. In 2024, Envigo pleaded guilty in connection with that facility, and the federal resolution included more than $35 million in payments—the largest-ever fine in an Animal Welfare Act case. That is not a paperwork problem. That is a pipeline exposed.

⚖️ The Pipeline Did Not End There

Even after Envigo, companies are still openly marketing animals for research. Ridglan Farms identifies itself as a USDA Class A dog breeder and USDA-licensed Class R research facility. Marshall BioResources presents the "Marshall Beagle®" as part of biomedical testing. If the breeding pipeline is still operating, the moral emergency is still operating too. One of the ways this system protects itself is through language: Model. Specimen. Supply. Unit. Colony. Those words are designed to create distance. This day interrupts the euphemisms.

🔬 Better Science Already Exists

Federal agencies are finally moving toward alternatives. FDA and NIH are increasingly prioritizing human-focused research and "New Approach Methodologies" (NAMs). Organs-on-chips, built from human cells, mimic the structure of heart, kidneys, and lungs—often providing faster and more effective results than animal models. The old excuse of “there is no other way” is getting weaker every single day.

The Sanctum Perspective

At Sanctum Paws & Fangs, this is not a side cause. It is the spine of why we exist. Once you have looked into the eyes of an Envigo survivor, neutrality stops being an honest position. We stand for ethical science, transparent reform, and the refusal to let “progress” be defined by suffering. My beagle is an Envigo beagle. That alone is enough to make this personal.

✅ What Action Looks Like

  • Sign the Humane Science Blueprint: Add your voice to the movement for transparent reform.
  • Share the Truth: Use your platform to talk about NAMs, tissue chips, and human-based research.
  • Support the Survivors: Stand with the organizations caring for rescued laboratory animals.
  • Refuse the Euphemisms: Call it what it is—a life, not a "specimen."
