Animal Cruelty/Human Violence Awareness Week is not abstract to me. My beagle is an Envigo beagle.
When people talk about animal cruelty like it’s a distant headline or a debate for "someday," I cannot meet them there. I know what it looks like when a dog survives a system that was never built to honor their trust. In 2022, over 4,000 beagles were surrendered from Envigo’s facility after horrific violations. That isn't just an "unfortunate situation"—it's a systemic failure.
⚖️ Cruelty Rarely Stays in One Cage
This week exists because cruelty toward animals and violence toward people are deeply connected. It’s what experts call "The Link." Whether it's domestic violence or community safety, research from the FBI and medical journals shows that violence is rarely isolated. When a society gets comfortable treating one living being as disposable, it rarely stops there.
Cruelty teaches entitlement. It normalizes power without accountability. That is why this isn't "just an animal issue." It’s a human one.
🧬 Envigo Was Not the End
The Envigo rescue was a victory, but the commercial breeding pipelines for research didn't disappear. Facilities like Ridglan Farms and Marshall BioResources still operate today, treating beagles as "inventory" rather than individuals. This is exactly why I feel so strongly about our mission. The problem wasn't one bad facility; it’s a structure that keeps finding new cages.
🛡️ What Action Looks Like
Feeling sad isn't the goal—interruption is. Here is how we move the needle this week:
- Speak Up: Learn the signs of neglect and report it. Don't look away because it's uncomfortable.
- Support Safe Havens: Many survivors of domestic abuse stay in dangerous situations because they fear for their pets. Support programs that keep families and pets together.
- Target the Pipeline: Stop treating lab breeding as invisible. Awareness is the first step toward dismantling the system.
- Sign the Blueprint: Add your voice to the Humane Science Blueprint. Every name is a vote for a different future.
Final Thought
Some weeks are celebratory; this one is for telling the truth. It’s about what kind of world we are willing to tolerate. My beagle is a survivor, but justice isn't a single rescue—it's ensuring the pipeline itself eventually stands empty. Not on our watch.
