Black Cat Day: A Black Cat Is Not An Omen

October 27 is a reminder that a color should never decide how long an animal waits for a home.

There is a color that gets left behind.

Not because it is less beautiful.

Not because it is less loving, less playful, or less worthy of a home.

Because for centuries, it has carried a story that was never true.

Black Cat Day is for them.

The cats who wait longest in shelters.

The cats passed over at adoption events because of a coat, not a temperament.

The cats still turned away from adoption altogether during the weeks around Halloween.

The cats who lean into a hand the same way any orange tabby or calico does, and never get the chance to prove it.

At Sanctum Paws & Fangs™, we believe a black cat deserves more than a superstition attached to their name.

They deserve to be seen as an individual.

A black cat is not an omen.

It means the myth has outlived its origin, and someone still needs to say so.

The Myth Was Never About the Cat

It is tempting to treat this as ancient history.

“That’s not a real bias anymore.”

“People don’t actually believe that.”

“It’s just a Halloween thing.”

Those things feel true. They are not.

Black cats have been tied to bad luck, witchcraft, and misfortune since medieval Europe, when folklore turned an animal into a symbol for fears that had nothing to do with fur color. That superstition crossed oceans and centuries, and it still shapes decisions today.

Shelter data consistently shows black cats are among the least adopted and most euthanized cats in the country, and they often stay in shelters longer than cats of any other coat color.

None of that reflects the animal.

It reflects a story that was never corrected.

Shelters Are Not The Problem. The Myth Is.

Shelter staff are not choosing to overlook black cats.

Adoption counselors are not the ones repeating the superstition.

The volunteer fostering a black kitten at 11pm is not the problem.

The problem is a centuries-old story that keeps getting repeated by people who have never stopped to ask where it came from.

If we want black cats adopted at the same rate as every other cat, the myth has to be named, and it has to be retired.

Out loud. Every time someone repeats it.

Black Cats Are Not Blank Slates

A black cat is not a Halloween prop.

Not a spooky-season photo trend.

Not a decoration that gets put away in November.

They are someone.

A black cat in a shelter may have slept on a couch once.

A black cat outside may have been dumped because of “bad luck” a previous owner blamed on them.

A black cat startles at the same sounds, naps in the same sunbeams, and loves as hard as any other cat in the building.

A shelter intake form is not a biography.

It is a snapshot of a system that has undervalued this color for too long.

How To Show Up For Black Cat Day

You do not have to adopt today to make a difference.

  1. Share a black cat currently waiting for adoption from a shelter or rescue near you.
  2. If you are considering a cat, ask your local shelter directly which black cats have been waiting longest.
  3. Support rescues that track and report black-cat-specific adoption bias — awareness only works when it is backed by data.
  4. Retire the superstition out loud, every time you hear it repeated.
  5. If you are ready to adopt, give a black cat the same first look you’d give any other color.

None of this requires perfection. It requires refusing to let the myth go unanswered.

The Sanctum Standard For Black Cats

At Sanctum Paws & Fangs™, we believe:

  • a black cat’s wellness needs are not different because of their coat
  • clean-label nutrition, low-stress environments, and regular veterinary care matter the same way they do for any cat
  • visibility is not vanity — it is how an overlooked animal gets seen
  • a superstition is not a reason to delay or deny an adoption
  • shelters and rescues deserve support in correcting their own black-cat adoption numbers
  • every cat deserves to be evaluated as an individual, not a coat color

This is not about feeling clever for one day a year.

It is about refusing to let an old story keep deciding who gets adopted.

Before You Go

Black Cat Day can feel like a small holiday.

It isn’t.

Every year, real cats wait longer because of a myth that was never about them.

A shared adoption listing finds a home.

A corrected superstition changes one more mind.

A shelter volunteer’s patience matters.

A black cat curled up in a sunbeam still matters, the same as every other cat in the room.

A black cat is not an omen.

A black cat is a cat who has waited long enough.

And if we believe Pets Deserve Better™, that has to include the ones still overlooked because of their color.
